Even if i am not a cs major (cis major) are the oppurtunities about equal in terms if getting a job as a programmer? I understand there are many different fields of programming. For instance, would an interviewer be more cautious hiring a just out of college cis student than a cs student to fill a backend position? Or does it all come down to skill and knowledge etc?

It depends on the company, but at my company the degree and resume just gets you the interview(CIS or CS isn't much of a difference so that won't matter). During the interview we ask questions relating to the field you'll be working in (java, sql, and logic questions). We use these questions to determine if you have the necessary problem solving ability and technical background for the job. You also interview with a hiring manager who tries to assesses your personality and work ethic to see if you'll actually do your job once hired.

Every company uses a different process to hire employees. It is a good idea to look up interview questions for the job you're looking at applying to and studying beforehand. The job interview for your first job will be the first test in your life that means anything.
