This is from second hand experience but I know that this is not true for a fact. My family is consisted of programmers and engineers(please don't read too hard into this and think I am being egotistical because I am not) and I can guarantee you that there are many people in the software industry that are not well equipped for the job. My cousin talks to me all the time about how there are many under-qualified(subject-wise) employees at his work place. My dad was talking about a project he was working on at AT&T and how there was this one developer that consistently requires help from him and other members of the project. So, no... people don't get "weeded out" as often as you think they do.
I also see it all the time in my university >.<
This happens in my company as well. I didn't say none slip through. My point was it's easier to detect someone who clearly knows nothing than it is to detect someone who sucks hard at making friends with others because he thinks he is God's gift to programming.
I have someone on me team who literally can't code. She was pushed through tech screening due to having connections to the director. But she isn't going to be here for long. We've already identified her as dead weight and our management is going through the red tape with hr to terminate her. Director strings can't save her now. All in all it was a minor inconvenience having to deal with her until we could legally fire her and reopen the position.
If your family member's team management within the company doesn't have similar protocols in place then it's not the shit candidates fault. It's the shit management's fault. Take care of that bad egg.
