I'm now a Linux Admin for a very large company, one among many people in this field at this company. I'm going to use this thread to post about new things I learn and weird/interesting stuff that happens at work.
Unfortunately I start Nov 18th, so right now this thread is just to share the good news until I start!

Grats!

I just got a new job about a month ago.. It's nothing too specific, but I'm application support for U-Haul international (so I work in the main headquarters in Phx, AZ), providing support to the managers of a WFH call center (mgrs and sr agents work in-office). I started with U-Haul working from home taking inbound sales calls and found the job on their email client. I just sit at my desk all day with a lot of down time and help with general computer problems (and I move around hardware.. something help desk is supposed to do but doesn't), and I take bug reports from the managers and look into them / recreate them / forward them to dev to fix.. This job is just a foot in the door for me here, there's a lot of advancement opportunities for me here, it was a pay increase (putting me salaried full time at 18 years old was nice!) and it's something that I like to do, instead of try to rent out U-Haul trucks all day! Good luck to you man I hope you go far with your new company!

1st/2nd days of work

This job kicks so much ass, seriously. Words can not explain the amount of ass this job kicks. The first day of work was pretty standard I think for most companies, there was an introduction as well as tons of paperwork that got filled out (agreements, benefits, insurance, ect) then I took a tour of the place. Since I know my rights now working here I'll let you all know where I work (see last line in this post), I got a job at Rackspace. After the first day I was pretty stoked, however with the job title of Support Technician I guess I was a little led on as far as where exactly I'd be going. Originally when I applied I applied for working with cloud servers (in a nutshell it's a more dynamic vps), however I didn't make it in -- they said they then found a spot for me, and I was going to get to come on board. Well I'm actually coming on with a completely different group, I work with Cloud Sites. So I'll be typically doing the same exact work, however how they're setup is a bit different, customers don't have ssh accounts, with a cloud sites account so they're limited by cp controls.

Intro day I come into the lobby where there's a bunch of later 20's/30 yearolds, I thought they were all workers but actually they're new employees. I was the only one there who was 18 I'm pretty sure. Didn't take any pictures of the place but it really is phenomenal, still don't have the slightest clue where I am 90% of the time, all I know is there's random ping pong tables or arcades scattered around along with coffee shops and whatever else. I'm still not 100% sure what's confidential and what's not, the company is very open in the fact they do regular tours and jazz like that, but I'll keep details to a bare minimum.

I came in this morning for my first day of "actual" work, I get to my desk and they hooked me up with a bunch of REALLY nice things, my desk space is looking awesome. I was introduced to over 50 people for which I will never remember any of their names, and went through a few training exercises which I think I did very good on, then I (assume) I was ahead of schedule so they had my jump into shadowing some other workers to get a feel for the interface and what people work with as well as programs they use. Anyway today was a good day, stayed there for a couple extra hours without even realizing it, I think I'll actually start doing some work tomorrow.

I'll be working first shift for a while since the trainer is on first shift, then I'll swap over to third in a few weeks when I no longer need any assistance.

THIS PLACE ROCKS

Days 3,4,5,6

So this first week apparently I messed up my login by using the same username for two different accounts ( :wallbash: ) So I couldn't use a few of the tools that I really need to actually start working. I pretty much shadowed my peers for the rest of last week along with learning things specific to our particular setup. The whole team that I've been working with I can tell is very close, and a very fun group. Nearly every day we go out for lunch, and communicate/joke around all day, it's a great environment to be in. I FINALLY started doing some actual work today, nothing in particular that I couldn't handle, I guess we'll see how the next few days go and see if anything throws me off course. I also talked to some colleagues in different departments about career paths I should/could take to get to my goal of being a dev, so now I have a solid plan for what I'm actually going to do (classes, books, career paths) and feel pretty good about things. So far so good.

No problem man. I graduated high school this last year (2013) but I've been doing freelance for a long time, coding since I was 12. They didn't ask for transcripts so I doubt they looked at my grades, however I had around a 3.5, I was superrrr lazy with school work that was irrelevant.

The interview process specifically for this company is VERY VERY VERY long. They process people intensely, you'll go through verbal tests as well as testing scenarios where you ssh in and fix a box. I lost count of how many calls I had after around the tenth call.

Everyone who works here has an amazing personality or is super knowledgeable, so you need to be one or the other, or both. Know your default ports, your way around apache and mysql as well as linux commands and data structure.

If you're applying specifically for rackspace pm me.
