Best way to start really is to use the technologies that run the internet in the first place.

Pick an easy distribution of Linux, like Ubuntu or S.u.S.E. maybe.  Install the Apache web server and configure it (it works out of the box).  Use afraid.org to point a dynamic domain name to your home network, and start building a website on it.  Within a few months, you'll have a general idea of how websites work...but there's years ahead of you to perfect your skills.

Hope that helps a bit, lemmie know if you have any questions!

Get Domain name
Get webspace
Download Notepad++
Get FTP Login credentials to webspace
Download Filezilla
Fire up google for HTML/CSS/PHP/ASP/Javascript syntax

Good to go.

Remember, you should never duplicate code. Write the code once in a function, and call the function where you need the code executed.

We have an expert here! Please, do tell a 15 year Unix administrator how it's done then?

A 15 year Unix administrator would not suggest a weighted down children's os.

Why spend your time learning to setup a server on a foreign os when you are a hobbiest looking to dabble in it all.

Correct thing to do is to install wampp or xampp and access your site locally. When you're better there are paid solutions if you'd like your site to be live, or simply forward port 80 and point them to your ip

are you seriously suggesting that windows with apache is the "pro" operating system, over "weighted down children's os" linux is?

not to mention whole "*amp" is a horrible horrible thing, 3 worst things in the server world: apache, mysql, php.

if you mean that specifically ubuntu is a weighted down children's os, do tell me in what way.

*amp is a resource hog and a security disaster waiting to happen, might as well direct him towards joomla at this rate. However, that's where hobbyists ought to start really. Volumes could be written about the failures of *amp, and yet a beginner/hobbyist shouldn't concern himself about those just yet. As far as OS goes, I'd recommend windows really. *amp wastes way too much resources has so many security holes that it doesn't justify the use of anything but Windows.

Don't forget that the whole point of an initiation is for beginners to get accustomed to a popular stack in order to understand the concept globally. Only then will they grasp why *amp is so bad, and naturally move on to better solutions, if they wish to progress further. Running it locally can help to understand the stack mechanics as well.

Sums up my response, it's plug and play.

Those "3 worst things" happen to be some of the most popular things, you're foolish to say that. Thousands upon thousands of jobs for those knowledgeable in those. To knock them all aside because you're a hipster and believe ruby and Ubuntu are next gen sit the fucked down. Ruby isn't friendly enough yet to be commercially used, and will remain a specialty for some time. Ubuntu is loaded with gnome among other packages that do nothing for your server. Ubuntu is for hipsters who download it to look cool and different from their friends. At least everyone I've met, might be because I use ssh for most everything.

Sorry, as a unix expert, what's the best way to make a complete image of a drive?
