You aren't reading the question or the answer correctly.  Reread what you wrote in your very first post.  Then reread it again.

Hint: "each register requires 5 bits to address" can be rewritten as "it takes 5 bits to address each register"

But why does it take 5 bits to address each register? :wallbash: Also for your other question

How many bits do you need to represent the number 32?

6, not 5.
So where do you get the 5 from??

ok, scratch the question about how many bits you need to represent the number 32

here's a better question: how many non-negative integers can you represent with 5 bits?

Okay nevermind, it is 32. But why 32? Because there are 32 registers? Why is the number 32 important at all?

reread the original question. ignore for a fact that we're talking about registers or anything related to computers.

imagine for a second that i have 32 ducks (numbered from 0 to 31), and i ask you to pick 3 ducks out of the 32.

what's the minimum number of bits you're going to need in order to communicate your answer to me?

5. Now I get it.. I feel retarded. It's because you need 5 bits to represent 16-31 right?

:bonk:

5 is not the answer to my question, by the way. but i think you get it anyhow.
