yeah. I want to learn more, but for whatever reason I learn way better in a school setting. That same reason is kind of holding me back from doing lots of projects for myself, in a way. To me, starting a project now with no 'cool' knowledge (like how to actually make programs do stuff that isn't just the basics - loops, prints, etc) would be un-satisfying. I want to know cool methods and algorithms and stuff. And while they probably exist out there, I really need some sort of context with them.

Like carter suggested, I will probably just stick to my school and see where it takes me. If there is an area they don't cover enough then I will make up for it myself. I would feel more comfortable learning something outside of class when I at least fully understand one or 2 languages and all the cool things you can do with programming.

Calling a programming language inferior is just bad. You have many different languages, and each of them has their goal. As an example, if you want to develop for the web, c# might be your best bet. But try to make a program that works with the hardware in C#, and you'll see it's not really the language to choose. C++ is much more superior in this scenario.

Well I dunno about that.

What kind of development are you talking about? PHP is the backbone of the web, broski. I wouldn't really recommend C# for the web; that's just silly. Dynamic languages like Ruby or Python is the way to go if you aren't conforming to PHP.

He said that if I read
Pro C# 5.0 and the .NET 4.5 Framework (by Andrew Troelsen)
I will learn more in a month or whatever than I will learn during my 2-3 year stay at college.

Your friend is right, this is really good book.

Ive read Pro C# 4.0 by the same author
Learned alot in short time
But
Book quite quicky moves from beginner stuff to advanced topics - you have to have some understanding of basics before starting with this book, otherwise you might get lost with anything above chapter 6

Not sure I agree... ever hear of a web service? Java and c# are huge web languages for enterprise applications. Incredible power and flexibility, you would be surprised. Check out java ee or wcf for .net
