are you already experienced in programming and want to learn .net or are you a complete beginner? that's targeted at the former, not the latter

New to programming, it was actually bought for me... I was looking at different books myself, read on the back it was a Intermediate-advanced book...

also do you have any recommendations as to a beginners book?

I have a friend who is a professional c# web developer, he had me read some great books for c#, but I do not recall what they are anymore. I left C# to go back to C++
The one thing I can recall from him telling me is that C# In a Nutshell is a must

http://www.amazon.com/5-0-Nutshell-The-Definitive-Reference/dp/1449320104/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391111200&sr=8-1&keywords=c%23

he had both of these, although I would think the definitive reference is more suitable for your situation.

i doubt anything marked as "definitive reference" is suitable to someone brand new. if it spends enough time explaining things to new people, it's unlikely to be detailed enough for someone more advanced.

Are you only looking for C# or are you looking into other languages too?

I don't have this book personally but I have other John Smiley books. He writes his book in a unique way. It's basically reading a narrative of him and a class he is teaching. This type of book isn't for everyone but if you have trouble reading technical books I'd recommend giving it a try. One of his other C# books was my first book to start C# with.

If you don't want to start with the IDE you can opt for this one:

learning syntax and how to write code isn't hard, the hard part is learning programming logic, algorithms and business application.

google thenewboston for easy tutorials on the syntax, then do some programming logic videos on youtube. once you get these down (at least passed beginner) you can pretty much learn by thinking of programs and creating them
