So I have recently been learning C#, but have just been laid off and received a very nice severance package, woo, so while I look for a new job, I will be teaching myself coding.

Now the basic idea for the game I am interested in is a management style game, 2d graphics, something similar to Kairosoft games, I like the Pixel effect, but more in depth and more options I hope as there games are pretty straight forward.

I have been looking around and it seems like C++ or C# are good ones, but for specifically game design I have no fricken clue and would love some input on this.

Thanks in advance,

If you specifically want to make games, you might want to check out unity.

Java / C++ / C#

Anyone of those languages will work. If you don't already know a programming language, i'd suggest starting off with Java or C#.

Anyhow, once you learn one of them you'll be able to pick up any other programming language relatively easy.

For game development you want an Object Oriented Programming (OOP) language. The enforced constructs and comprehensive compiler checks will make your job easier. OOP languages include Java and C#. OOP languages also have automatic garbage collection.

With older languages, you will have to worry about freeing up memory yourself, avoiding dangling pointers, and accessing memory locations that can end you up with corrupted software and BSoDs.

C++ doesn't have automatic garbage collection. Neither does Obj-C.
