Hey ladies and gents.

Well i really wanna get my programming back on track. Did a fair bit of looking through and experimenting last year, and ill try keep this tl;dr compatible!

Learnt how to use xhtml, html5, css2 and css3, but still need a little practice to make them stick properly.


What i really wanna know:

I have knowledge of SQL already, and would just need spotting up on that. But to make constructive websites, am i best next learning client side programming (JS) or am i better to learn server side and get a more interactive site, allowing for looking up and storing data in a database? (PHP)

Also where would you guys suggest me starting to learn this? I dont fare too well when doing stuff from text, so texbooks and things are out of the question, but a nice little support tool. I tend to get on with more interactive methods. Things such as video tutorials, or interactive learning sites with examples that you would problem solve and troubleshoot.

Any help is good help. My projects i have in mind will need to encompass both PHP and JS, but the purpose of this is to learn which would be better, easier and lead on better to the other, as i know they can be very similar in syntax.

i would suggest signing up for code schools, its $25 a month and they have a bunch of interactive courses.

I'd personally recommend PHP if you want to get in to some beefy websites.
JS will just add some fluff to your website imo.

This is more my thought process, would allow more functionality using PHP to the sites i do make, and thanks for the advice, but is there anywhere you would recomend learning correctly?

I started learning PHP by making my own Wordpress themes.
I don't have any references to Video Tutorials, but I'm guessing you can find a lot on Wordpress since it's a huge community.

You might want to google/youtube 'Wordpress Custom Theme' or something.
You could even start with simple Wordpress Plugins.

The backend is done for you so it would be easy to make some powerful functionality while only doing a little.

I have seen alot about wordpress but havent actually looked into what it was. I just thought that it would be a case like the rest of the programming stuff that i would just go on a site and learn programming from scratch.

I tried Thenewboston, which is where i got to learn the different html and css languages, but the guy that does the php tutorials literally sends me to sleep (im english as well as him, and his voice is just so monotone and crappy! doesnt keep my attention at all!)

If you want to try something completely new, you could try Python.
