The murder rate in Vermont is 2.2 per 100,000. The murder rate in Mississippi is 20.5 per 100,000. Nearly 10x higher
Vermont is 1.5% black. Mississippi is 38.0% black
Of the incarcerated population in Vermont, 12.3% are black, 12.5% when looking at just serious violent felonies / murder.
Of the incarcerated population in Mississippi, 62% are black

The assertion Red states are more dangerous than Blue is a naive low resolution take on the data you sourced. The more interesting trends in the data was among the top 5 states with high homicide rates. All southern states adjacent on east coast. Wonder if you take those out or use medians how the numbers would fall.

The funny bit was Biden/Trump attribution to the difference which the articles show are long standing. Numbers spiking in 2020.

Anyways, alright data but authors have weak analysis.
