Abraham Lincoln, the greatest president the USA has ever known, and an early republican, freed the slaves.

The republican party was founded in 1854 in Ripon Wi, it was a LIBERAL party based around abolitionists who sought to free slaves.

At the time in the 1860s the democrats who won nearly all of the southern states in the 1860 election, were conservatives.

in modern times the Republican-Conservatives win the south, and the Democrat-Liberals win the coastal regions.

Liberals freed the slaves, conservatives wanted more (not less) slave states, and this led to a civil war, that the conservatives lost. mostly because they were too poor to build trains because they spent all their slave money on overpriced plantation mansions.

todays conservatives are indeed yesterdays liberals in many ways, and in many others are far more entrenched into statism that both 1860s liberals and conservatives would find abhorrent. as well as the pole smoking of industrialist corporations. everyone hated industrialists in the 1860s, now its a dually tribal political jockeying point. the industrialists have evolved, we've all regressed.

this can be seen in many aspects of life, capitalism's roots are in worker empowerment over industrial overlords. modern capitalism is glorification of the overlords under the often times false guise of negotiation of wages by individual or unions of laborers.

in general both conservatives and liberals over time are increasing their party platform's progressive nature, the two lines will never touch but are not parallel. liberals are outpacing.

so you're saying we should bring back the Whig party?

Whig party was always the best party, best philosophy.
