I can see that, but I am still confused to what the point of that was, and I'm confused to why republicans elected the guy in the first place?

Yes, but it depends on the politician and the types of lies.

Usually the "lies" are just exaggerated promises and it should be understood that politicians can't make good on those promises if they don't have the votes to pass the laws.

So like when Bernie Sanders says that we need to abolish the billionaires, I don't think anybody legitimately expects the guy to grab a gun and start taking them out.

I agree with that, there is a spectrum of lying and some are worse than others. I've mentioned this before but politicians are protected so they get to get away with more than the average Joe, either way nothing will happen to George Santos even though he should probably get removed.

Politicians are definitely protected under the 1st amendment more than regular people. As an example, if I wanted to run an advertisement on local broadcast TV, they are allowed to deny my advertisement based upon it's content. They are not allowed to deny the politician no matter how bad the advertisement is because denying them the ad spot would infringe on their 1st amendment rights.
