I just thought of what I think to be a very fascinating thought experiment on my drive just now. The conversation around the potential for nuclear fallout has gotten me to think about the government's role in sharing w/ the public information as it relates to an actual or suspected world-ending event. Would the world's astronomers share with the world of an incoming massive stellar object that would eliminate life on Earth as we know it? Or, would they try and keep it secret out of concern that humanity may not be fortified enough to keep social decorum under a guaranteed expiration date? For that reason, through the lens of a thought experiment, I'm curious what the people of PaRD would do.
If you were on a small team of researchers that discovered a phenomenon that is guaranteed to end all of human life in 3 years (ie. An incoming massive asteroid, solar flare, etc.), would you vote to make that information public or would you vote to that information purely within the room/team. Assume for this thought experiment 3 things:
1. Your team is so smart that you're the only ones who currently and will ever discover this threat.
2. The threat is so massive that it cannot be stopped or avoided, and it is guaranteed to end all human life as we know it/destroy Earth.
3. If everyone votes to keep the information secret within the team, then they actually do so (ie. a guarantee that there's no leaks now or ever).
