Two American private citizens who traveled from Alabama to Ukraine to fight against Russia have been confirmed as captured by Russian backed separatists. They are the first Americans taken in the fighting. The white house has already said they should be treated as formal prisoners of war, while Russia says they will be regarded as foreign mercenaries not subject to POW protections.

I doubt they'll kill them to set an example. They're far more useful as bargaining chips, especially with them being US citizens. Sean and Aiden may not be as lucky, even though they were in the Ukrainian army prior to the war and should be treated as enemy combatants

I can't be sure whether Russia would execute or take prison Ukrainians at this point, that is, as policy, after Russian troops have a chance to decide for themselves. But for Americans yeah by far the most likely scenario right now is Russia sentences these two to death as mercenaries and then holds them as leverage instead of killing them. Russia wants all the trading fodder it can get to claw back concessions from America, deal for sanctions and wedge between us and our allies. Same scenario as the british guys


What message was sent by these two walking up to a Russian patrol and surrendering?

The two men were taken prisoner on June 9 during a battle northeast of Kharkiv. Not sure a topic was necessary.
It's a message saying something like "Ukraine is not alone, whatever you want it or not".

It's not a "send" message, but a "perceived" message.

A perceived message of "Americans will walk right up to us with their hands up and surrender"?
I think Joe Biden already sent that message without these guy's help

War prisoners are losers and i don't like them...
