I doubt they'll kill them to set an example. They're far more useful as bargaining chips, especially with them being US citizens. Sean and Aiden may not be as lucky, even though they were in the Ukrainian army prior to the war and should be treated as enemy combatants
I can't be sure whether Russia would execute or take prison Ukrainians at this point, that is, as policy, after Russian troops have a chance to decide for themselves. But for Americans yeah by far the most likely scenario right now is Russia sentences these two to death as mercenaries and
then holds them as leverage instead of killing them. Russia wants all the trading fodder it can get to claw back concessions from America, deal for sanctions and wedge between us and our allies. Same scenario as the british guys
