Serious question from the west, what would it hypothetically require to turn underdeveloped/third world countries into self-sufficient countries with opportunity to grow and advance. What is holding them back? Lack of technology? Lack of money? Lack of safety and security? Lack of cultural integrity? I honestly want to know.
If I can help the world become prosperous I’d like to. I’m not rich but I’m not poor. I’ve been poor. Never been rich. I never turned to crime, never resorted to violence. Millions and millions of people worse off than me can say the same thing. How do we get civilized society back on track? Historically I don’t think it’s just money, throwing endless money hasn’t really achieved any goals but to line a few well connected pockets. What is missing? My whole life all I’ve heard about Somolia is pirates and destitution. Why?
Resources are just one part of the equation. It doesn't really matter how much money you throw at a region, if they don't have the civil infrastructure with a population that buys in, nothing will change.
What happens in a lot of these places is even when they get millions in aid, the people in power loot it, with only a fraction going towards solving issues. Family members and allies get decision making spots, while the pleb is left to stand for himself. People also don't buy into institutions like governments when in very poor places they do little to nothing for them.
Look at Sri Lanka right now. So much of the world operates like this.
