So I got the letter I was dreading, and my property values went up 20% for one, 33% for another. And the last evaluation on the latter was 2019 or 2020 I think.
We're in the midst of a housing bubble, with home values skyrocketing astronomically, faster than any point in American history. The past year eclipses the pre-bubble-burst of 2004-2007.
There are more realtors than there are real estate listings. A 'modest' home is now worth $500-700k+. Something that looks like the Unabomber lived in it can run $300k+ if its not where the Unabomber lived.
But this is just one slice of what are a myriad of parallel crises plaguing us right now. We've got, all at the same time, and in no particular order;
- A skyrocketing housing market and bubble, prices climbing astronomically
- A crime wave larger than the 90s, with a breakdown of police forces and gang gun battles in broad daylight in cities, murder rates soaring
- A temporary lull in Covid, still killing huge numbers of people but looming as another potential wave in weeks and months to come after the early signs across the globe of new variants.
- A surge of migrants at the border, a fourfold jump from Obama and Trump years even prior to the end of Covid restriction being lifted, with illegal aliens flooding in
- Fentanyl overdose deaths climbing dramatically, the first year on record with 100,000 YTY deaths, a big increase in an already huge wave
- Gas prices, $4 at a pump being on the low end as we're headed into even higher prices to come
- Inflation soaring out of control, even with modest pay raises across the board people are being drowned by far higher inflation
- Businesses failing en masse, a die-off as chains close down due to rising costs and labor shortages and supply chain issues. Grocery stores often missing trucks, restaurants simply closing.
- A war in Ukraine as Russia invades and a humanitarian disaster unfurls and war crimes are rife, and the US is losing its hold on global geopolitics as our allies side against us.
- The normalization of infringements of civil liberties, as show trials feed innocent people to mobs and journalists and protesters get locked up.
All this has kicked in so fast, and at the same time, I don't think anyone can chalk it all up to Joe Biden. He'd have to be the world's most efficient walking disaster to accomplish that all. I think much of it can be explained as side-effects of Covid, others as longstanding social and economic issues exacerbated by Covid and its side-effects. But even as a root cause, much of it can't be blamed on a pandemic either. But whatever the causes, we're really in the midst of the shitstorm right now.
