https://sfstandard.com/controversy-rages-as-california-follows-sfs-lead-with-new-approach-to-teaching-math/California has decided to embrace a dumbing down of the American education system pioneered by San Francisco, which pushes algebra back a year, retires the teaching of calculus and seeks to end any recognition of 'gifted' or 'talented' children. The primary stated goal of the agenda is to lower the outcome gap between white and black children by lowering the bar even further. The proponents of this new system intend to inject social justice into STEM fields as required curriculum at public schools, leapfrogging previous attempts to corrupt STEM into STEAM with the arts- the arts being replaced with social engineering. The framework says mathematics problems should use more inclusive pronouns and word problems related to issues like housing and climate change. It tells teachers to use mathematics courses to make students study the historical contributions of 'marginalized people' to mathematics and 'take a justice-oriented perspective'. The original framework proposition also made several citations to "A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction", a text that asserts that mathematics education reinforces white supremacy.
While the proposed framework doesn't completely forbid schools from having advanced mathematics programs for high achieving children, it does demand schools start curtailing those policies and mandate required low level math courses that would be redundant for advanced students, punishing them. Then Algebra course are pushed from 8th to 9th grade, and calculus ends at pre-calculus at 12th grade, only when combined with geometry and algebra 2.
