On July 7, 2021, an exclusive published in the Los Angeles Blade, a Southern California offshoot of the Washington Blade, a prominent LGBT newspaper, said anonymous sources from Wi Spa staff and within the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have cast significant doubt on the incident as described within the video — the Wi Spa source saying that transgender clients are well known by staff and none of them were in the day's spa records and the LAPD source saying the department currently could not evidentially substantiate the incident or find evidence of trans presence on the day in question. The Blade writer speculated that a cisgender man could have acted in concert with the woman in the video, recalling a 2015 incident in Washington in which anti-transgender activists asked cisgender men to enter female-only areas as a form of protest.[7]
According to Los Angeles Magazine on July 19, "several outlets have questioned whether the video was staged to generate outrage at a time when conservative politicians are weaponizing trans rights for political gain."[16]

He already had multiple convictions.
Charges have already been filed in this case, and Merager faces six other pending felony counts of indecent exposure in another case for exposing himself to women and children at a swimming pool

So the next part of this story is- how much did the police and prosecutors know, and when, and yet chose to remain conspicuously silent? There were ongoing riots in LA and national media attention was on this story, but even when police knew the incident was real and perpetrated by a serial sex offender, it was hushed up. Two people were stabbed in those riots, and yet we were getting national media articles like this;
