So It's been well understood for a while that the govt pays you to have babies but i never knew exactly how the math works out and just started tinkering with a few of these online calculators.

If you're working a 30k job in canada, it seems like ramping up your skills to get an 80k job has the same impact on your monthly income after taxes as pumping out 5 kids.

Feel like im getting ripped off here šŸ¤”

Yeah but then you have 5 kids eating a good chunk of that money.

If you're busy ramping up your skills, you are not likely going to have 5 kids.... and in the situation where you decided to have 5 kids, well you now have 5 kids eating away your income. In Canada the average cost per child is $10,000 - $15,000 per year.

Having 1 kid is significantly more difficult than "ramping up your skills."

What are people spending money on with their kids that it comes out to that much per child? Daycare stands out early on but outside of that once they're in school i dont see why people would spend so much. What are kids doing these dsys?

Groceries - buy in bulk
School - shouldnt be too much till college
Sports/activities - i can see this getting expensive but not running the numbers up to 15k per child

Depends on skills.

I’d rather have a second kid right now than go and get my CFA

Food, sports, gas, other after school activities, clothing.

I easily eat $500 dollars of groceries per month and I ate more as a growing teen id bet. I bet my mother spent 100 dollars a week easy on gas driving us around and that was at 60 cents a liter. I played sports 6 days a week a times and my brother 3-4. That's before going to friends houses.

Groceries, gas and clothing i see as mandatory but can be managed

sports and after school activities you have a wide range of potential costs no? Basketball was pretty cheap when i grew up whereas hockey was and still is expensive af

Hold up, you ate $500 a month in groceries alone?

I mean, i grew into a pretty big guy. 6 Foot 220 played a ton of sports and still to this day workout 4-6 days a week and I wont eat frozen except frozen veggies. My mother raised me that way so what I eat now is easily a reflection of what I ate then. But i think on average most young males growing up eat their parents out of house and home.

I played basketball , volleyball and football for the most part. They were cheap aside from football but I was working by that time so I paid myself.

Its the gas and the millage on the vehicle.

I just did baseball and basketball with friends and kids in the neighborhood on school grounds which was free cept for the equipment. We used one bat, a tennis ball and barehands for baseball cuz broke.

It sounds like you were in competitive leagues?

The grocery bit still seems crazy to me but ill see when i get there.
