Im genuinely just lost on this one but perhaps our liberal friends can explain the basis for this to be a problem that needs solving. I don't recall coming out of differential calculus lectures thinking about white supremacy.

Changes to Ontario’s math curriculum announced last year by Education Minister Stephen Lecce will include a ‘subjective’ and ‘decolonial’ approach to mathematics, according to documents posted on the ministry’s website.

“Mathematics is often positioned as an objective and pure discipline,” reads a section of an online brief highlighting the ‘vision and goals’ of the updated curriculum.

“However, the content and the context in which it is taught, the mathematicians who are celebrated, and the importance that is placed upon mathematics by society are subjective.”

Math, it continues, has been “used to normalize racism and marginalization of non-Eurocentric mathematical knowledges,” and explains that taking a “decolonial” and “anti-racist approach” to teaching math will outline its “historical roots and social constructions” to students.

“The Ontario Grade 9 mathematics curriculum emphasizes the need to recognize and challenge systems of power and privilege, both inside and outside the classroom, in order to eliminate systemic barriers and to serve students belonging to groups that have been historically disadvantaged and underserved in mathematics education,” the brief continues.

Minister Lecce previously announced the new curriculum will bring early math streaming to an end, a practice he says created barriers for racialized and historically marginalized groups.

Teachers will be required to promote cross-curricular learning and human rights to create “anti-racist, anti-discriminatory learning environments.”

Sounds like they're going to be teaching kids better ways to interpret data instead of just the intrepretation methods without context.

Mathematics in the abstract, as a system of logical statements, isn't racist, but which mathematicians we choose to recognize and how the math is interpreted can be.

Ugh. Get real dude, the problem is those kids dropping out of school and joining gangs. Quick money and bling bling. Don't care about the future...

Math isn't fucking racist, wrong choices are fucking wrong

This has been in the works for awhile now. The instead of adding resources for underprivileged youth (usually of color) to succeed we just go ahead and lower the academic bar to give everyone the illusion that they succeed. I bet if you look deeper at what they are doing they are reducing the standards and adding easier pathways for students to complete their mathematics requirements like what we are doing in the states.

The major historical figures in mathematics are mainly white. That’s just a matter of history at this point. That won’t change no matter what or how we teach.

Removing streaming or tracking could be good. Some schools go overboard with this. It’s not racist by intent, but it ends up looking racist when the lower skills mathematics class are mainly students of color.

reading into this it literally sounds like they are going to change story problems to have examples of POCs in them.
