Im generally against most proposals ive heard for reparations but this seems very reasonable. What say our fellow pardians?

EVANSTON, Ill. — Evanston, Illinois, on Monday became the first U.S. city to make reparations available to its Black residents for past discrimination and the lingering effects of slavery.

The Chicago suburb’s City Council voted 8-1 to distribute $400,000 to eligible black households. Each qualifying household would receive $25,000 for home repairs or down payments on property.

The program is being funded through donations and revenue from a 3% tax on the sale of recreational marijuana. The city has pledged to distribute $10 million over 10 years.

Qualifying residents must either have lived in or been a direct descendant of a Black person who lived in Evanston between 1919 to 1969 and who suffered discrimination in housing because of city ordinances, policies or practices.

Alderman Rue Simmons, who proposed the program that was adopted in 2019, said pro-reparations groups have offered pro-bono legal assistance if the program is challenged in court.

“This is set aside for an injured community that happens to be Black, that was injured by the city of Evanston for anti-Black housing policies,” Simmons said.

If we lived in a real "free market" then every black resident with ancestry to an enslaved person could sue for back wages + interest, and sue the government for deprivation of civil rights.

As MLK said, it would take more than the wealth of the entire nation to repay 200 years of lost wages with interest, plus reparations for the humiliation and lost rights of those enslaved.

I don't agree on principle with giving someone of a certain racial group money for simply being of that race. These kinds of policies will foster resentment and racial tensions seeing as it's the taxpayer footing the bill

There is no problem with investing in 'levelling up' projects if it's to address structural issues like poverty and access to education, but you have to judge that on a regional level and stratify based on incomes, educational background, family history, etc

I agree but the limited scope of these reparations makes it palatable.

Like this is pretty limiting, and the fact that it's up to around 10 million also means that this isn't just blank checks all around.
10 mil over 10 years, 25k each is like 400 people. Certainly only the deserving are mostly going to get this.

I don't see how this addresses the disparity at all.

If a family gets this money, is it going to have any effect on how their kids are treated by cops, teachers, landlords or prospective employers? Not likely.

Having to overcome one less barrier is definitely helpful, isnt it? No one said this was gonna be a panacea for every obstacle facing black people, but it's clearly better than nothing.

Honestly I think it's kind of dumb. No one alive today was a slave back then, and blacks weren't the only slaves. Reparations for something no one alive was apart of and isn't all inclusive is redundant. What about asians? What about native americans?
