Maybe Britain should wage war? Ya'll did when China cracked down on Opium smuggling over a hundred years back.
China buying brick and mortar schools in the era when b&m schools are dying seems silly. Are these higher level institutions? I'd think they would buy a school more for the research IP than indoctrination of another countries populace. Especially with how 'tinfoil' hat 'conspiracy theory' westerners are.
They do it for a myriad of reasons. Intellectual property is one reason, corporate / political espionage is another, but projects like the Confucius institute are also geared towards "correctly" framing international policy issues from a Chinese perspective. This includes Chinese human rights abuses, aggression towards Taiwan, and the vast crackdown still taking place within Hong Kong. The Chinese have been paying off Caribbean nations for decades to switch recognition from Taiwan (RoC) to China (CCP). There's no conclusion to draw from that except that they care a great deal about Taiwan. Nationalism is the bread and butter of the regime now that they're being weaned off Communism.
