Yes. I don't think there was any realistic expectation of a conviction. But the precedent was set that trial for conviction against a private citizen is indeed deemed Constitutional by Congress. So that vote can be avoided in the future.

Long term, the next step to be snuck into some omnibus somewhere is to remove the super-majority requirement for a conviction.
