I'm of the position that fishing for food is perfectly ok but catch and release fishing as a whole is unnecessary cruelty to animals and shouldn't be permitted.

How do our fellow pardians feel about this topic 🧐?

Being an avid sportsman. I would say 80 % of catch and release encounters happen trying to “keep “ eat fish etc but rules dictate their release. Some fisheries have gotten a bit smarter and just limited your “keeping” to the first encounters that could lead to your limit etc. I will catch and release on species I know are not number challenged and will not on ones that have limited numbers. Cruel? Dunno that fish process enough to be considered cruel.

I couldnt care less. Nature is harsh. Responsible catch qnd release isn't significantly different from the harshness of their life any other day.

The idea that fish feel no pain might be a bit outdated from the latest I've read on tbe topic.

That aside you don't think injuring/scarring/disfiguring/traumtaizing fish is problematic in itself? Seems like it can affect the behaviour of fish that survive which is not really a surprise.

Most studies done of the subject have shown fish do not have the nerve system to register pain, catch and release is entirely ethical and i release more fish than i keep.

Theres definitely a wrong way to do it. "Snag fishing" is pretty mean if you're not doing it for meat.

If fish were capable of feeling pain in their mouths i would not be able to catch so many using what you americans call "crawfish" for bait.
Think about what fish eat all day, other spiky fish, crawfish, all kinds of things capable of biting and clawing.. a fish hook is nothing.

it's stupid and unnecessary imo, but i don't think it does enough damage to outright ban it - i'm open to arguments though. i'd say fish and hunt to feed yourself and your family, i don't see anything wrong with that - but doing it for a 'sport' (why even call it that? where's the competitive nature? you managed to sit on your fat ass for a couple of hours to 'outsmart' a hungry fucking fish? how impressive!) is just silly and cruel.

what a silly rationalisation. obviously there is a massive difference between devouring a 'spiky' animal to feed and getting your mouth pierced / ripped open by a steel hook. by all means, say you don't care (enough) about firearm casualties the wellbeing of some stupid fish to give up your guns hobby, at least that's an honest and defendable position - but stop lying to yourself with such obvious bullshit 'arguments' in order to make yourself feel better about it.
