So the idea is simple: Prior to his Presidency, Trump utilized private security (for decades). He opted to keep his private security as President, though unarmed and more as staff.

Haven't heard much about them for the last couple years, but I'm assuming he still has them on payroll. So the question here...

The Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012 guarantees former Presidents a Secret Service Detail for life. However, this is not mandated. It could be changed to mandated, except precedent has already been set, when Nixon Relinquished his detail.

So, precedent is set, Trump doesn't have to keep them, he can afford private security and has been more than willing to pay for it for several decades, what's he do?

Nah, he'd get arrested by the FBI, not the Secret Service. Secret Service is pretty specific. They can make arrests if they witness or believe a person has committed a crime against the United States. While that sounds broad, it's not. Primarily, it involves attacks against the currency (forgery, bank robbery, etc.) and attacks against government officials. I mean, if Trump attempts to commit self-harm, can they arrest him for that?

Anyway, the "wargames" scenarios of post-inauguration Former President Trump being arrested have been played through. Nearly all involve the FBI. All very proper, polite, etc, with the detail continuing to protect the President even as he's being taken in for interrogation. It's... Decidedly odd. Doesn't seem realistic, but hell, who knows? This year's been wild.

Ah, you're thinking he'll pull the kicking and screaming exit? That'd be great for the media, tbh. Instantly viral. Give it a year or two and it'd be the most viewed video on the planet.
