I'm curious, what's everybody's current status regarding debt? Does anyone here have any significant debt, if so how much would you say is caused by COVID?

I'm super curious as to the amount of debt created during this extremely short amount of time. Private debt, rental debt, auto, etc., etc. Accordingly, I'm curious what the breaking point will be. There's got to be a point, assuming we haven't reached it already, where there's so much debt that they can't realistically hope to recoup anywhere close to the full amount right? If so, what happens? Do you think there will be a policy where they'll accept a much smaller amount if paid up front of paid in installments, do they try and enforce debt and push untold millions into homeless purgatory?

I have a million questions regarding the nature of debt after COVID and how it will affect things like credit, rentor's history, etc. going forward. I lack the education, insight, etc. to have any guess that aren't pulled directly out of my ass but I thought it would be interesting to get a feel how you guys are doing.

For myself, I have approximately 1,800 in unpaid rent with another 1,000 looming on the first, I have about 1,000 in unpaid utilities and some unspecified student debt that goes back far before COVID, but I consider much less pressing. Mind you, this is working two jobs, 4-5 days a week at each, both in service (I live in Vegas, so I know I'm not alone here), with cuts in both hours and wages likely around the corner.

One person got covid at our job so they sent a whole department home for a week to get tests. They only paid for two days of work.

Im jewish as fuck so im still above water but id say they jipped us out of 2k$ so far in addition to being really damn annoying.

Does Uber driving make much money in your area? I know some people that get by pretty well with it.

I think you need a career change, hoping for debt to be cancelled isn't the best financial plan

I don't have any debt, loans are scams IMO. Only get them when there really is no other option and pay it back as quickly as is humanly possible lol

I have a car loan that has $12k remaining on it.

A credit card that has $2k that we pay off every month for the points.

Two interest free cards that we used to make big purchases within the last few years that total $2k remaining.

Wife has $10k of student loan debt with an interest rate of ~6%

I have $100k of student loan debt, 75% of which was from when I was in medical school. Average interest rate is ~5%

No extra debt from Covid. My wife just got a new job with a 45% raise, I just got promoted and a 15% year raise with similar raise guaranteed the next two years.

So I'm one of the lucky ones that is in an exceptionally good position despite Covid, and all it's really done is make me save money by not eating out as much.

Loans are a tool. If you can invest and make more money than the interest on the loan then you are getting paid to take the loan.

Can't dispute this, my career path was definitely not the best should a global pandemic arise.

My thinking wasn't necessarily for my debt to be cancelled, but rather to work as much as possible during this thing as I can to keep the debt as small as possible or hopefully remain caught up. Unfortunately traffic at both has gone down so much that my wages have shrunk more and more each month, so I'm just now falling a little bit behind despite working as much as I can. This is a problem far more severe in Las Vegas specifically than other areas for a few reasons, the first being their commitment to hospitality is super high. During normal times it can be pretty good, moneywise. Before the pandemic I had spent years trying to become better at bartending with the intention of saving money to return to school on my own dime but this thing pulled the rug out of our collective feet.

Another disadvantage is the West coast being fucked, pushing people to move here seeking lower cost rent, goods, etc., which has caused rent to go up much more rapidly while simultaneously seeing wages drop across the board for their core industry.

Like Mr. Sisyphus I'll continue rolling the ball up the hill for now, I guess.

The bulk of the debt we have, other than our mortgage, is medical and student loan debt. And that's tens of thousands of dollars. Luckily I've maintained full employment throughout, so household bills, car payments, mortgage are all current.

Uber driving goes as the rest of the industry does. I've only taken one Uber during the pandemic and she said she turns off requests from parts of town they used to target and people just aren't coming out here like they used to.

Regarding the bold, what do you mean?

Zero debt outside my mortgage and a few unpaid medical bills. Home on covid vacation right now, being paid the whole while.
