While the Republican candidates remain heavy favourites in the GA runoffs, it looks like court-packing and nuking the filibuster is dead before it began.

Joe Manchin has promised to vote with the Republicans against both proposals.

Given that Manchin thought it necessary to come out unequivocally against it, you have to wonder what Chuck Schumer and Pelosi were doing floating these as possibilities. I wouldn't be surprised if this is why Republicans performed so strongly in the House/Senate races even with Donald on the ballot.

that pair never saw one of their own toes without trying to cut it off. they're the worst self sabotaging idiots the DNC could have. at this point them being scapegoats for a future sacrifice is all that we can guess. they constantly let the fringe get out of hand, because they're pussies.

I always thought the odds were against it even if Democrats had a 3-4 seat majority in the Senate.

Court packing was NEVER going to happen. I think Biden should still have his bipartisan commission on court reform so that we can see what the realistic proposals actually are though. Adding SCOTUS justices was always a fantasy and it never concerned me. One thing that I think we need is to add way more judges outside of SCOTUS. Having another circuit or two, expanding immigration courts, etc. should be a priority because the system is way too slow.

Manchin is coming out against this because the writing is on the wall and he's doing what he has to do to survive. I don't think court reform is a top 5 issue because it's something only intellectuals/activists really care about.

I actually think the Democrats do a significantly better job controlling the fringe than the GOP. Pelosi is able to pass legislation whereas Republicans can't.

I don't think it's Pelosi necessarily.

For a long time rich assholes like the Kochs actively encouraged the right wing fringe because they were useful to cut taxes. The policies that are adored by the right wing fringe greatly help the upper classes.

Now contrast that with the policies on the fringe left, which actively hurt the excessively wealthy. Higher taxes and greater social responsibility for businesses aren't something that is going to make them more money, even if the overall society will be better.

So the left is actively swatted down at every turn whereas the fringe right gets to build massive audiences and only get taken down when they do something really egregious. Leftist youtubers virtually never get monetized and their videos are recommended far less than their right wing counterparts. Then the right wing counterparts get a huge audience and do something so over the top they naturally get banned.

So you've got this weird situation where the left is more censored, but the right gets more headlines because they were able to actually get an audience who will then complain when they're banned.

you're not wrong. but i think they're also cursed by the moral high ground. their fringe can bark all they want with impunity, the right fringe has to hide until voting day.

i dont think its accurate to call the Kochs, or minimal corporate taxes, fringe right ideology.

At the end of the day, Democrats are always going to be doomed from that point of view. Republicans lack self-awareness and are more susceptible to believing false equivalences. I mean look at the "children in cages" talking point. Trump weaponized this policy in order to actively discourage immigration. Republicans believe that they have the moral high ground because "Obama built the cages" even though that was a way to protect the children from the general population.

With the Ukraine scandal they believe that what Joe Biden did (actively promote US and EU foreign policy) was WORSE than what Trump did. At the end of the day, you can't beat stupid.

I don't think it's as simple as that. Republicans run on the government NOT working so it's better for them to obstruct as opposed to cut a deal. Fundamentally, conservatives seek to keep the status quo and it's a hell of a lot easier to say "no" than it is to come up with a viable solution. In addition, the coalitions are much more pronounced I think in the GOP. Democrats are more of a spectrum without a very clear divide I think.

The kochs aren't fringe but they bankrolled the fringes as useful idiots.

Low taxes isn't fringe but what constitutes low has creeped down over the decades as a part of bringing the fringe ever more into the fold
