That thread is seemingly as confused as I am reading your OP. The Patient Zero history of HIV in the United States is the result of a misunderstanding of CDC reporting and a lie spread by Randy Shilts and his editor in order to increase sales of Shilts' book
And The Band Played On. Gaëtan Dugas was listed in CDC reporting as "Patient O" (The letter O, not the number 0), which stood for "Out of California". People misread this and believed Gaëtan Dugas was being referred to as Patient Zero, which he was not. There were actually several other people the CDC knew who were HIV+ prior to Dugas.
Randy Shilts was one of the people who knew this history but chose to ignore it and spread a lie about Dugas in order to increase sales. His editor later confessed to it long after as a coordinated, planned effort.
Lastly, once we knew what HIV was we were able to posthumously update the cause of death for several people who had previously died of unknown causes. As a result, there's good indication that HIV was already in the United States as early as the 1940s.
