https://www.axios.com/trump-executive-order-coronavirus-aid-c0f59817-b95c-440f-86d0-db1e46f4ab64.html
Today at Bedminster, citing the breakdown in coronavirus relief talks between house democrats and senate republicans, Trump made his coronavirus relief power move and took it out of the hands of congress, signing four executive orders to extend relief:
  • Defer federal payroll taxes for all people earning less than $100,000 per year
  • Extend the moratorium on evictions and give financial assistance to renters.
  • Renew the federal unemployment benefits through the end of 2020 as a bonus $400 per week, asking states to cover $100 while the feds provide $300
  • Postpone student loan interest and payments through the end of 2020.

Asked by reporters whether he expects it to hold up against legal challenges, Trump seemed to dare anyone to sue saying that it would take someone enormously unpopular to stand against people getting their needed relief money.
The libertarian caucus was unavailable for comment and their bodies are rumored to be buried under the Trump Tower garage.

The exact wording of the EO's isn't available on whitehouse.gov yet so I'm not clear where he's pulling his budget from or what power of the purse he's usurping.
At any rate, ball is now in the courts'... court. And still on congress, since they'll be expected to either legitimize Trump's benefits or vote against them, and look pathetic if they try to let it die in the courts and not act themselves.

these benefits are usually more or less smoothly phased out on income so there's no abrupt cutoff, people got coronavirus checks for less than $1200

I didn't know you could do that through an executive order, or is it only because he's extending existing legislation that it is possible? I am interested in them making the full text of the order available to read it.

I'm happy they approved the 400 though, I was worried I wouldn't be able to pay bills in the weeks coming up as my income got gashed by the provisions expiring. I'm curious how the 25% the state is required to supply will go down in Nevada, I know he had a hard time with the budget out here as all the unprecedented shit really ravaged our state (Nevada).

Fuck. People like me are going to have to work until we die aren’t we?

We’re going to be telling our grandkids stories how there was a time when we could retire at 65 and the government gave back some of that tax money it took and they’ll look incredulously in disbelief.

/e also the orders are now on whitehouse.gov

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/memorandum-continued-student-loan-payment-relief-covid-19-pandemic/
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-fighting-spread-covid-19-providing-assistance-renters-homeowners/
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/memorandum-deferring-payroll-tax-obligations-light-ongoing-covid-19-disaster/
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/memorandum-authorizing-needs-assistance-program-major-disaster-declarations-related-coronavirus-disease-2019/

so to be very specific: He's citing FEMA as his budget authority for unemployment relief, and the $300 federal aid is explicitly conditioned on governors ponying up their $100, there's no freebie $300 without state aid chipped in;

Quote
(b) To help meet the needs of the American people during this unprecedented and continuously evolving public health crisis, the Secretary of Homeland Security (Secretary), acting through the FEMA Administrator, is authorized to make available other needs assistance for lost wages, in accordance with section 408(e)(2) of the Stafford Act (42 U.S.C. 5174(e)(2)) (“lost wages assistance”), to the people of a State, including the members of any tribe residing therein, if the Governor requests lost wages assistance and agrees to administer delivery and provide adequate oversight of the program, for a major disaster I declared pursuant to section 401 of the Stafford Act (42 U.S.C. 5170) for COVID-19, under the following conditions:

(i) the Governor requests from the FEMA Administrator a grant for lost wages assistance pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 5174(f)(1)(A) and agrees to the cost-sharing requirement of 42 U.S.C. 5174(g)(2); and

(ii) the Governor administers delivery of financial assistance for lost wages in conjunction with the State’s unemployment insurance system.

(c) In exercising this authority, the Secretary, acting through the FEMA Administrator, shall, subject to the limitations above, approve a lost wages assistance program that authorizes the Governor to provide a $400 payment per week, which shall reflect a $300 Federal contribution, to eligible claimants from the week of unemployment ending August 1, 2020.

I imagine that he has the power to student loan payment deferrals, payroll taxes, etc. He simply can't extend benefits and he's talking out his ass/flat out lying. For Trump, it really doesn't matter what you DO because his base only cares about what he SAYS. Trump is banking on Americans being stupid for being civically ignorant and it's probably a safe bet.
