Assault rifles are already banned. have been since 1951 when registration of all automatic weapons was required.

a step in the right direction is south, towards the greatest country on earth. U. S. A.

Since 1951, automatic weapons had to be registered... not banned

This new legislation has nothing to do with automatic weapons. those were already prohibited. if you had one, it had to be registered, and it had to be disassembled and inoperable with the bolt literally in a separate room. and in any case, even if you did have an automatic weapon you wouldn't be allowed to have a magazine to fire it, as large capacity magazines are also banned, and have been for decades in canada. so let's pretend automatic weapons were legal, you couldn't do anything with it because you'd be out of bullets in a split second with a legal magazine.

but congrats on banning scary looking guns that are functionally no different than my deer rifle.

Living in a society means giving up some rights. Some people are comfortable with limiting capacity for self defense with the understanding that it actually makes everybody in that society safer, and others would rather flail their arms and scream 'MUH FREEDUMBZ"

99.9% of firearm murders are committed with a handgun by people not permitted to own one because of a felony conviction. how exactly is banning ar15 style rifles making anyone safer?

Must be hilarious to take a walk in the forest with family while knowing all weirdos around can get a sniper rifle without even registering.

Ironic. "Assault weapon" bans are the definition of unintellectual takes. They represent an insignificant proportion of overall gun violence, they're functionally little different from "legal" rifles, and their criteria is based on the emotional response your average soccer mom has to how the gun looks.
