Seems like there's a trend in people believing that hard work will not make their lives better and that improved economic growth won't make their lives better. A very bleak outlook, what do our resident pardians make of this issue?

https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/2020-edelman-trust-barometer-shows-growing-sense-of-inequality/11883788?fbclid=IwAR09iusXpbCQ6BM5Fmsk4MVBN3OWIk2L5E8UbQKFwjg6nWpLHKgMGP2UTfM
The 2020 Edelman Trust Barometer - now in its 20th year - has found many people no longer believe working hard will give them a better life.

Despite strong economic performance, a majority of respondents in every developed market do not believe they will be better off in five years' time.

This means that economic growth no longer appears to drive trust, at least in developed markets - upending the conventional wisdom.

"We are living in a trust paradox," said Richard Edelman, CEO of Edelman.

"Since we began measuring trust 20 years ago, economic growth has fostered rising trust. This continues in Asia and the Middle East but not in developed markets, where national income inequality is now the more important factor.

Its true inflation goes up quicker than people get increases. Not to mention most people start work making a wage well below poverty line. Jeff bezos is a prime example of whats wrong with the world. The pos sits on 100 billion and doesnt even pay his employees a living wage.

Amazon has improved the lives (and wallets) of tens of millions of consumers.

Stop getting upset at people wealthier than you. You live better off than 90% of the global population, are you giving away your wealth?

Amazon employees make a decent check... hell Amazon’s lowest employees in the us make 15/hr, over double the min wage, if you want to criticize someone look at Some of the bs jobs out there, guys busting their asses at carwashes for straight min wage and not being able to afford a studio apartment, people trying to live off fast food jobs, only being able to eat the garbage they serve the public cause they cant pay rent and buy food from the grocery store... etc...

I do think hard work CAN pay off, although if you are smart your hard earned money can earn you more money rather than being thrown away on bullshit. That’s where people go wrong.

I'm 100% sure a larger percentage of my income goes to taxes than Jeff Beezy's. Dude has nothing on me.

There is no question that the return on labour has decreased compared to the return on capital. Piketty has shown it very well. The balance is tipping, and if it goes too far there will be retaliation.

We are at a time in American history where getting access to economic gains usually requires a giant fee in the form of college tuition, and even then the results of those gains go to the top earners.

It's not really surprising that people are getting disillusioned with the system. Most people are workers first, consumers second, and investors third, and as a country (really, as a planet) we've decided that investors come first, customers come second, and workers come a very VEEEEEEERY distant third.

Something that's interesting that is tangentially related. When Occupy Wall Street was happening one of their most common demand was.... stable employment. And yet I would see people on this forum constantly calling them leeches and parasites who just want to leech off the system, even when they would hold signs up saying they wanted to work, and when it came out that people who currently work on wall street were over-represented at the protests. People want to be useful, they want to work and produce. It's part of human nature to want something bigger than ourselves to strive for. Marx wrote about being alienated from the product of our labors, but it's come to the point when we are becoming alienated from the ability to perform useful labor.

People lose motivation in a class-sealed society, where most of the jobs are locked and you have to act like a bitch to get the rank above. Not the same conditions than the 50' for sure. It goes far beyond that anyway, whole democracy is at risk.

Comparing a car wash or fast food restaurant to amazon isnt a good comparison amazon has alot more money to pay there employees vs a car wash whos owner probably doesnt even profit 100k. A fast food restaurant probably profits 500k a year unless its a mcdonalds. Totally different playing feild. In ontario min wage is 14$ an hr. Our costs of living like food internet cell phone is alot more vs states.where i live someone has to work 60 hr a week to afford to live on their own. So to me 15$ an hr is shit and can be better.hard work might pay off but at that point its not much of a life.
