Washington (CNN)Special counsel Robert Mueller has charged former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn with "willfully and knowingly" making "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" to the FBI regarding conversations with Russia's ambassador.

He is due to appear in court later Friday morning, a court spokesperson said. The White House declined to immediately comment.

Flynn is the first Trump administration official and the fourth connected to the campaign to be charged as part of Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Russian government and members of Trump's team, as well as potential obstruction of justice and financial crimes.

Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates were indicted last month; they pleaded not guilty. And Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty for making a false statement to the FBI over contacts with officials connected to the Russian government.

The charge against Flynn is the first in Mueller's probe that has reached someone in the Trump White House and is the latest sign that the special counsel investigation is intensifying.

Can we just imagine for a second if Obama's former national security adviser was charged with lying to the FBI in his first year in office?

They had Flynn dead-to-rights with so much more (FARA violations, for example), that this is pretty much a guarantee that he has flipped (or has agreed to flip) on a bigger fish.

at least the far right is consistent. they didn't need actual evidence to believe Obama was a Kenyan born muslim who was trying to install a Caliphate and destroy america from within, and they won't read any evidence now either. these are the types of voters who base their choice on "going with their gut", they're sheep. Trump told them Flynn's a good guy, so obviously he's innocent.

I do wonder if the White House will continue the "we expect the investigation to be over soon" talking point.

There's no point in doing that, trump is never held to the same standards regarding literally anything. It's like saying imagine if Michelle had posed nude, but we saw how republicans were frothing at the mouth over her showing her arms in a sleeveless dress so..

Dems are praying that Flynn makes up dirt about Trump.

Ironically Trump can pardon Flynn.
