The price gauging thread really got me thinking.

All these people donating money to Houston victims are ultimately hurting them by giving them a handout. They are subsidizing their poor decision making (to live in Houston, a known flood-prone area).

I argue that we should not give to Charity for any tragic event, and instead let the free-market and cost of rebuilding ultimately dictate where people move.

We have a moral obligation to NOT give to charity and instead let the free market sort it out.

So I make a call to all of you. Please DO NOT give money to Hurrican Irma victims or Houston victims. You are just going to make lives worse in the long run.

This also goes with private companies like Anheuser-Bush. We need to boycott them over their charity.

Who's with me? I expect full support from our local libertarians.

Wow what a stupid idea. The actual truth is that they don't need charity, at all. They are in an excellent position because all their wealth was destroyed. Since they have no wealth or buying power they will as a group be desperate for a source of wealth to survive. That means that the glorious corporations will flock to the area with super low paying jobs, and the mutually beneficial freely entered into opportunities will bring a new age of prosperity thanks to the free market.

I never considered that!

These areas are a wonderful opportunity for every corporation to build infrastructure!

The low cost of workers should offset the expensive cost of a flooded factory every decade, and the area will thrive!

Not only that, but we know that the market will work itself out fantastically without the need for any sort of legislative intervention because it's a well known fact that people act extremely rationally when they're about to / have just lost their entire livelihoods. The next few weeks for Houston are going to be an economic golden age.

I oppose all charities. All of them are potential scams. Non profit is for profit. Don't give homeless people money either. They are potentially scammers too. I agree with OP. Keep your money. Don't give any shit. If you really want to help them, then go down there and give the money personally to each family down on their luck. Otherwise get scammed.

nice try shitting on libertarians by taking their logic and applying it to wrong premises, coming to a conclusion that makes them look out of touch.

the wrong premise is the bolded part: there is a big difference between bad decision making and bad luck, and you know it. every place along the gulf coast can potentially be hit by a hurricane. unless we abandon a stripe along the entire gulf coast stretching 300mi inland, its simply a matter of bad luck to get hit by a hurricane in that region.

also, as a smart guy who claims to be working on a phd program or something like that, you should know that hurricane landfalls are far too rare (in almost all places, there might be a few isolated exceptions) to ever provide statistically reliable data about where to move and build, and where not to.
