I don't doubt this stuff's existence but given the vast space the internet operates in, I'm skeptical as to whether Russia hiring trolls has much of an impact on public opinion. Yes it's deplorable and morally wrong for a government to do that, but it's Russia, what do you expect?

I'd be quite surprised if Western countries were employing tactics like these, it would probably be spotted pretty easily and the risk/reward trade off just makes it redundant at the moment.

It was in our news as well. I'm actually not really surprised if it were to be happening.
It sounds like a part of controlling the media as a dictator in modern times.

/e ofc it can also easily be used for foreign politics.

Take 100 people, dedicated to this, and following a true studied, profesional, tactic.
Ask each one to creat 10 violents meme or fake news per day... and deposit it on 50 or 100 fake accounts on twitter/facebook etc...
I let you imagine the work, the amount of faked information/views they can generate after a year or 2. IMO this is a real threat.

Is it much worse than donating money to a campaign in order to have influence over policies being formed ?

It's a different type of influence being put forth. less manipulative on a government and more in manipulating the public. We basically manipulate the public as well in our campaigns and press releases. The word isn't so bad as it sounds like, because I'm manipulating you as well. The difference is that we were able to check statements being made by politicians and it was done in a largely intelligent environment that made proper media responses about the issues at hand.

Now, it's getting more chaotic.

Lol.. I'm actually realizing that the multis we have resembles the problem in these factories as well.
We've got ppl sprouting non sense all the time. Troll trying to trigger a reaction by incorrect statements.

We've been diverting attention from the actual issues at hand: What it means to ban 7 countries from visiting a country, towards having topics about why liberals are bad.

What do you do about it? Do you fight fire with fire? Do you ignore it all together ? Perhaps a fact checking policy (mod in our case) ? Or something else ?

it's even worse and more productive than i explained in previous post: take a small building with 100 people, the work will be serialized/taylorized/divided like in any factory

- 1 specialized in providing different IP adresses (not even from proxies...)
- 1 other creating/initializing fake accounts, following a strict procedure to avoid any detection (different syntaxes, different exifs, etc)
- 2 graphists dedicated to create the meme & pictures
- 5 tacticians: picking up all the info that can be exploited (faked), like a small/minor riot, and transform it into a terror attact or a revolution, depending of the need
- x guys dispatching the jobs to do
- xx workers, spreading the infos on accounts they have in charge

etc... This must be an amazing, awesome, factory, and theres no way to detect them on social medias, excepted shutting down facebook or twitter...
I dont see, even trying to filter the accounts at facebook or twitter levels isnt easy.

So it's 100 people simulating the opinion or 100.000 or maybe more

Only real way would be to have 100 people debunking it, and behind a system blocking the pictures. Google got his hands on too.

=> personaly im just reading 2 serious newspapers (moderated left & right). I dont understand why theres is so much positive meme about Putin...

American politicians (looking at you Gingrich) have done similar things. There were a couple twitter accounts during the 2012 primaries that were found to have 99% of their followers registered from the same village in India.
