President Obama: "In the next two months our troops will pack up their gear and board convoys for the journey home"

All US troops will be pulled out of Iraq by the end of the year, President Barack Obama has announced.

He ordered a complete withdrawal from the country, nearly nine years after the invasion under President George W Bush.

About 39,000 US troops remain in Iraq, down from a peak of 165,000 in 2008.

The US and Iraq were in "full agreement" on how to move forward, Mr Obama said, adding: "The US leaves Iraq with our heads held high."

"That is how America's military efforts in Iraq will end."

According to the Department of Defense, there have been 4,408 American military deaths in Iraq since March 2003.

Good news. Hopefully this will enable us to finish up in Afghanistan.

Now watch more oil companies move in just like when you had that big withdrawal last year.

A little nervous about this, but we'll see how it goes. Things seem to be more stable there than they were in 2006.

Edit: Also... where's MyEnemy?

Still waiting for the pullout to actually happen and I need to make sure no U.S. troops are left behind.

If so, I'll paypal him $20 bucks and leave PARD for good. Lol.

If you pull out in time there's usually no reason to worry.

Aww, don't leave PaRD. :( We'll miss you!

Also, how the hell are you going to paypal him if he isn't posting here anymore? Did you set it up in advance or something?

We are doing a total pullout ( under a timeline established by GWB ) only because the Iraqi government is being influenced by the Iranian Shite element within . Nobody in the Administration , the State Department or the military leadership really thinks this is a good idea but it makes a good 30 second soundbite for Obama to act like this is his doing .

If the Iraqi's asked us to stay we would have .

Hence why I'm nervous. :/

Also, I don't think that the Iraqis asking us to stay would've meant that we would've stayed. There's a lot of political pressure from many sides to pull out.

Then again, Iran would be wise to back off for a while, considering that they just had an assassination plot publicly foiled. Fingers crossed that the Sunnis and Kurds (and non Iran-oriented Shiites) will be able to counterbalance them in the meantime.

We really shouldn't stay unless they ask us. However when I read that we were pulling out by the end of the year I immediately thought reelection stunt.

It will be good to get that whole history behind us.

How could it have turned out any different? Saddam Hussein was the biggest countermeasure to Iran in the region, with him gone and his power-base dissolved there was nothing stopping Iran from getting it's sycophants in power there.

I really think that's a false flag.

Turkey has already made a military incursion into Northern Iraq just the other day . If the Kurds are once again abandoned and decimated because of our short sighted foreign policy I will hang my head in shame .
