Well off the top of my head, the # of people in prison since the early 1980s is what... 8-10 times more now, but the rate of crime is nearly the same.
What is crime?
The Drug War had a big launch since the 80s, and possession/transfer/cultivating of drugs is a crime as well. In that effect, they both have grown steady.
Other than that, our Justice system has been a pretty big success, other than some very fixable loopholes. As for innocent convictions and guilty releases, that will happen with any system.
