Guess what, he didnt have to save my non-believing ass.

I often see religious people talking about how God saved them from darkness.

He freed them from gambling, alcohol, drugs, porn, crime, or whatever destructive path they were on. They tell us that this is why they've given their lives to Jesus, and how everything changed once God revealed Himself to them.

What always strikes me is the assumption that this somehow makes them spiritually superior to those who never had those struggles in the first place.

As a non-believer, I've never been addicted to gambling. I've never needed alcohol to get through the day. I've never had to rebuild my life after years of self-destruction.
Yet I'm supposed to admire people for returning to a baseline that many of us never left.

I mean, I admit that if your faith helped you overcome addiction, that genuinely IS admirable, dont get me wrong. Recovery is hard, and you deserve credit for it.
But overcoming your own failures doesn't make you one of God's special favorites. If anything from his hypothetical perspective, then you are probably the problematic ones, the weak ones which couldn't get their shit together on their own.
You're not evidence that God exists. You're evidence that human beings can change.

And those of us who managed to live responsibly without this claimed divine intervention deserve at least as much respect as those who needed it.

So by all means, celebrate your recovery. Just don't mistake it for proof of moral superiority or god.

Oh thats what you say, but I've had countless discussions with religious people in which they told me how they are morally superior to non-believers through god's influence.

No, the factual statement that I never struggled with addiction doesnt mean morally superior.nit means mentally superior to people who fall for addiction.

the transition changes a person. cant help but notice they give God the credit

your second statement reeks of pride.

Of course they give god credit if they think he saved them from being addicted disappointments for their families and themselves. Once he did that they are special club members tho.

And the second statement might reek of pride from your point of view, but in reality it's just the truth. Truth can sound harsh and offensive tho, I agree.

If the Christian God saves people from addiction, he's doing a pretty shit job looking at the world.

I think you're projecting because your own post reeks of superiority. I.e "I have never..." Great I am happy for you. You still claim mental superiority, yet someone claims spiritual superiority. If you don't believe in God, by definition of only what's tangible, as many materialist people are, then that would make your thought process worse because it's based in reality, something you know to be measurable.

There is a reason the saying exists "It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven." It's doesn't mean that rich people can't go to heaven, it means it's harder to see God when you have everything you "need" in the earthly sense. That's why so many in Western/first world countries become atheist.

I have never felt God more than when I went to Pakistan.

The reality is, if you have an open heart, God finds you at your lowest. Unfortunately, some of these people still suffer from Pride, which makes some of the things they say sound pretentious.

In short, don't ascribe God's qualities through the actions of men, at least not always.

This could have been worded better, I'm in a hurry. I'll come back to if later if we continue the conversation.

They all think the world revolves around themselves. What you say only stregthens them in thinking they are special club members.

You can't really converse with a Christian they come from this notion of original sin and they blanket apply to everybody. You know what they say about assumptions? We have a saying* in the North. Can't trust a Christian, they'll cheat you because beholden to some notion of God complex. Further there's a lot of corruption coming from the Christian groups running the municipalities and small parts of our nation.
