The first assassin and one who actually shot at Trump, Thomas Matthew Crooks, had no connection to Ukraine. The second, Ryan Wesley Routh, was an obsessed LARPing Ukrainian ultranationalist trying to recruit people to fight overseas and plotting to murder Trump because of the war- but he was also self-radicalized and dismissed by Ukrainians who had no real contact with him- he was a clear example of delusions of grandeur rather than a conspiracy. But just this february->march 17 year old Nikita Casap was arrested for murdering his mother and stepfather, in a plot to steal their bank accounts and use the money to pay for a weaponized drone to assassinate Donald Trump. And he was an ardent neo-Nazi accelerationist that wanted to kill Trump for "promoting white genocide and degeneracy" and declaring "Jewish occupied governments must fall. The white race cannot survive unless America collapses" in his manifesto in which he hail'd hitler repeatedly. That much of the story was available until the new filing this week, that's not news
As it turns out in the new FBI documents:Nikita Casap was in an active conspiracy with at least one Ukrainian national on Telegram, more likely multiple, plotting the murder of his parents, purchase of a military drone and assassination of Trump together and laying out his target and motives. The Ukrainians were not only aware of his plot to kill Trump, but engaged in overt acts of conspiracy to assist his plan. Casap, with all the planning skills of a schizoid 17 year old, intended to take a remote route to avoid law enforcement and lay low before fleeing overseas to live in Ukraine, hoping that Zelensky would shelter him even if it was publicly known he murdered Trump. One Ukrainian is identified as "Roman Viktorovych" whether that's a real name or not, and using Ukrainian cyrillic in his name and a Ukrainian country code and number and writing with Ukrainian cyrillic orthography and spellings as opposed to Russian/international scripts. "Roman" wrote to Casap in cyrillic as he laid out the plan to kill Trump. Another presumed Ukrainian who wrote under an anonymous name/number in Cyrillic actively assisted Casap by instructing him to hide his parent's bodies in the basement to buy time, to obtain a new license plate to swap on his vehicle and laid out the mapped escape route to take him from Wyoming to California. They spoke in not-really-disguised code about the cost of a "bike" with "200 wheels", except just directly saying its a drone with a shrapnel bomb paid for by bitcoin. There were also messages implying money had already been sent by Casap, though any logistical progress on when or how he'd carry out the assassination remains doubtful and unknown.
It appears Casap murdered his parents in mid February and continued to live in the house for two weeks while attempting to arrange the assassination, fleeing at the end of the month with their cash and jewelry. In those two weeks, he continued submitting schoolwork online and sent message to family members via his parents phones to pretend they were alive. A welfare check found the bodies badly decomposed on Februrary 28th in Wisconsin, and Casap was arrested while running a stop sign on March 1st in Kansas
The first gunman actually shot Trump and would have killed him but for a conveniently timed immigration chart, and was taken out by countersnipers. The second got in place to have the drop on him but was thwarted by normal security measures as an advance agent spotted him and was taken alive. This kid killed his parents but never got close to Trump, and was taken alive.
