Yes, but that is not happening. It's so bad the US Dept needs a complete reimagining. I'm not sure what that looks like though.
Year over year more public districts are going to the 4 day school week, primarily because they are unable to afford operating budgets for 5 days. In the USA, districts moving to 4 day weeks have increased 600% since the 90s. In Minnesota, I think we've got 8 running that schedule with 2 considering. I think it used to be less than 4 pre 90s.
Where I am, the politicians will say the schools are fine, they are meeting minimum minutes in the classroom. Their rankings in core proficiency say otherwise.
There is no free school lunch on the 5th day, no special needs service, etc. locals who pay FED tax have to subsidize the 5th day relative to other citizens in richer jurisdictions.
