We used to have a thread like this.

Post whatever fiction and/or non-fiction you have recently read, as long as it has some political/philosophical/sociological/...relevance.

I'll start.

Fiction:

"Tender Is the Flesh" (original title: "Cadáver exquisito")
By Agustina Bazterrica

Not for the faint of heart, some gruesome imagery. Interesting perspective on meat production, though.

Non-fiction:

"The Balkans, 1804-2012: Nationalism, War and the Great Powers"
By Misha Glenny

Gives some good insights into the region. A decent primer to watch the "Death of Yugoslavia" documentary series.

My wife (real) read that book, "Tender is the flesh." She (real) liked it.

Better or worse than Lame Deer, Seeker of visions?

Haven't read that one; however, the timeline of Lame Deer is later than that of Black Elk. The latter covers the time before, during, and immediately after things like Wounded Knee whereas Lame Deer wasn't born until the early 1900s where boarding schools were already a thing.

Fair. I don't think I could handle 600+ pages on the topic. Lame Deer's was a good mix of memoir and philosophy, I enjoyed it bigly.

I read the Sacred Pipe literally decades ago. I'd have to revisit it.
Does this book go into his 'conversion' to Catholicism?

I liked it too. I don't think it's beautifully written, but it's very effective in evoking a sort of revulsion, which I somehow quite enjoy.
It's like watching a movie like Seul Contre Tous, if that makes sense.

Do you feel like it gave you a new insight into the assassination, or was it just an enjoyable 'what if' narrative?

Enjoyable. Stephen King is known more to give insights in the supernatural

Sure. I know King is primarily a fiction author, but I was unaware of the book. Might have been akin to Murakami's "Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche". Which I can recommend.

Glad you enjoyed the book though.
