I personally think it abhorrent that we're spending so much on off-planet exploration and infrastructure plans while global inequality remains a blight on our species. I also think it unethical that a small percentage of humanity, comprised of astrophysicists in particular, are making decisions that have major real and potential ramifications for all of us. Human history has been marked by a consistent presence of abuse, exploitation, and general inhumane treatment that I think it naïve to believe the same won't be found in our efforts to become a multi-planetary species. The power differential between governments and the wealthy v. everyday people continues to widen, and at least there's some theoretical recourse on Earth by being able to protest, seize means of production, and physically confront those in power. Once this has changed, and the billionaires have absconded to the moon or Mars, we as everyday people will be absolutely fucked.
100% agree and they've gotten away with all of it by distracting all of us with a never ending circus.
People like Stephen Hawking amongst others have called people like Elon Musk delusional for wanting to "Go to Mars" so our species can "survive". The planet we live on is in bad shape and they are a bad father trying to abandon their child for a "fresh start" in an inhospitable place where likely many who even take the journey will die on the way or die when they get to Mars. The human body is not meant to be on Mars. The human body is not meant to be in space. But rich people who don't give a fuck or people who want to "dedicate their life to science" are all about it.
I've been to the poorest most remote areas of India and seen human suffering and animal suffering that would bring anyone to tears. When I see these rich billionaires and their lifestyle I actually feel sorry for them. They literally can only feed their ego day in and day out.
What use would it be if a small group barely survives on Mars or Europa and the actual planet we were born into becomes uninhabitable. Not exactly a victory.
It's the same with enlightenment/realization. How does being in total bliss in a cave in the mountains of Tibet help anyone but yourself. It's pure selfishness like you said.
