strong borders are critical to a nations defense.

A state without borders isn't a state.

Yeah, like the Most powerful country on earth having a completely open border with Canada that you can freely walk through?

Borders should be minimal to allow the free movement of labor.

At least that's the free market answer, and I've been told by Republicans my entire life that the free market will solve literally every problem.

I lock my door for security, and when people knock on it, I ask "who is it?!" before I open it...

US and Canada have friendly joint operations to surveillance their mutual border.

You can't just walk across without passing through customs.
They will send police after you if you cross outside a customs checkpoint.

Other countries require a Visa to even enter, EU, India, Korea just to name a few.
If the police know you don't have a visa you can end up in their jail or prison.

My point is, a physical barrier is not the only form of border security.

Things can get in control when you have national ID, national healthcare & related welfare systems ID: All this, centralized, is making illegals life much less desirable.
Along with national laws punishing employers recruiting illegals, of course.
