So this is probably just conspiracy nonsense, but I ran across a weird tweet earlier from a former Turkish politician (İbrahim Melih Gökçek, was just a mayor, nothing important) which had a video of a Romanian senator (Diana Iovanovici Șoșoacă) supposedly saying that the recent earthquake in Turkey was man made, and that the US was behind it.

I can't understand the video because she is speaking romanian, it is only a couple minutes long so if anyone can understand romanian and wouldn't mind translating I'd appreciate it, even just a rough overview of what she says. Here is the tweet/video

I don’t believe this is true, but it doesn't seem impossible, either way I thought it was a pretty crazy thing for a politician to be saying, so thought it might be interesting to discuss.

There's a silly idea about hoisting a bunch of tungsten rods into orbit and then dropping them down to hit things. A completely absurd idea that is exceptionally cost-prohibitive, but that's what the claim is. The idea is called "rods from god" if you want to google it.

IIRC, this dummy said they were aluminum rods or something, so even dumber.

I don't doubt that if the technology was there, the CIA would be inducing earthquakes in countries they wanted to destabilize.

Ya it sounds crazy to me, but I'm curious what the lady said in the video so I'm hoping someone who posts here might understand romanian and be able to say if it's just crazy nonsense, which is probably is.

The issue isn't whether the politician is crazy. It's the fact that someone would even think such a thing. It says a lot about how the USA is viewed in other countries.

I've heard of that in passing in some old conspiracy stuff years ago, sounded pretty implausible but something DARPA might have dumped some money into for fun. It is definitely stupid but I can't say I wouldn't want to drop some big rods on stuff from space.

In that wiki article it listed some different methods how it could be done but I have no idea what the technical requirements would be for any of them, I would think it would be something less showy than Rods from God though if it was man made. I'm not crazy enough to believe this btw I'm just bored and down a weird rabbit hole.

Just look at the wikipedia talk page right now for the "October Surprise" that Reagan used to make sure he defeated Carter in 1980, since that NYT piece came out about 40 years too late lol. Or Operations Cyclone, Gladio, Condor, Timber Sycamore, etc etc. How the West dominates the world is done secretly, very often.

But rods from god makes no sense, IMO. Also it couldn't cause earthquakes even if they did do it. The energy put out by an earthquake is measured in hundreds or thousands of petajoules. Ain't happening with a couple tonnes of whatever alloy.

I'm open minded to them because they so often turn out to be true but I haven't seen enough about this particular one to really have an opinion, and it is a pretty wild accusation. My increasing distrust of the US is probably the only reason it even caught my attention lol.

From what I've read in these links I think the most likely method would be by injecting or extracting fluid underground somewhere near a fault line maybe, but I'm really just spitballing because I know nothing about the technical requirements or limitations for any of that. The Turkish guy talked about a ship possibly being involved as well.

Turkish politics, though it's not something I pay any attention, seems incredibly stupid and spectacular - in the sense of there being a lot of 'spectacle'. Produces a lot of idiot characters.
