ya the wildlife aspects are not good, especially if it's crossed to mammals, not good. i just want to be able to raise meat birds this year to get 100% off grocery store meat.

i assume you've had home grown chicken before? if not, here's a fair warning: you will never want to go back. it's such a difference. don't have my own, but an aunt of mine has plenty - just thinking about it makes my mouth water...

This is a great way to live, some time spend in the garden or in the coop it's a link with nature we all need.
Could also be the starting point of a pandemy when i think about it.

3 years ago i raised 2 batches of 50 birds each, had very little death only like 5 total, and processed them all and put them in a chest freezer quartered.

then we had a kid and i just didnt have the time, now she's a toddler who will be happy to "help" (read: follow along and ask 1000 questions) so im doing another 2-3 batches this year. and we're getting laying hens again also after a fox killed my whole flock last fall.

i have a mobile coop for the meat birds that i just move to fresh grass each day, pretty simple until it comes time for slaughter.
