John Brown wanted the word put out to slaves about the insurrection plan prior to harpers ferry, sending out people to recruit and get them ready for revolt. Douglass went around telling them that brown's a lunatic and would get them all killed and they should ignore him
To Douglass's credit, it worked out better that way. I mean, I think. Maybe in alternate plotline, the slave revolt was a success, civil war was averted, millions of lives were saved, then either black men were liberated as brothers and equals without the whole reconstruction and jim crow era, or the south appealed to the north to invade and put down the revolt when the atrocities were heard, they agreed and slavery was legalized by constitutional amendment and abolitionists were tarred and feathered and hrmm actually yeah douglass had the right idea
ahh yes all i remembered was Douglas coming around to Brown's general idea that slavery couldn't be abolished peacefully. the particulars got put out of mind long ago.
