I actually think Tim Scott would be a shoo-in if he managed to win the primary. There are plenty of candidates who are capable of winning I think.

Would Tim Scott play well with white working-class voters in the Rust Belt though? I don't think that a Republican can win the presidency if he only performs on the replacement level with this type of voter.

Having said that, I don't think they'll charge Trump for this. I imagine that the DOJ wanted this as quiet as possible but Trump made a very public statement about what happened. At the end of the day, they just wanted the documents back and now they have them. What bothers me about all this is that we KNOW the Chinese and other adversaries have tried to infiltrate MAL. If Trump really did have nuclear secrets (ours or another nation's), then that's insanely irresponsible and a massive national security risk.

According to the reporting, the FBI had to crack Trump's safe to obtain the documents... I won't deny that it was still irresponsible to store classified documents in such an environment, but by the looks of it, it's not like he had the juicy stuff lying around in the open next to his golden toilet seat.

I mean, were they wrong? He clearly HAD the documents so I don't think the retrieval of the documents was out of line. Whether or not they want to charge him is a different matter. Frankly, it looks like the DOJ is treating Trump as if he's above the law. I think if it were anyone else, they'd be in MUCH more trouble.

Wait, does the warrant which was published list the documents they actually seized at MAL? I thought it only listed the documents they wanted to retrieve?!

She didn't just take this document home to lock it away in her private safe, she actively leaked it to an investigative website. Moreover, military personnel was explicitly prohibited from interacting with The Intercept, the website she leaked it to, by a DOD directive coming out of the Obama admin.

Why are you so surprised? At the end of the day, most voters prioritize policy/ideology/vision for the country over the personal conduct of a politician. Sure, a few voters would be willing to see all the policies they hate implemented, the country and the world move in a direction diametrically opposed to what they prefer, all just to uphold some abstract norms or punish a "lack of decorum"... but those are a rare breed.

For every person who votes for Trump because of his tweets and antics, there are at least two who vote for him in spite of it, plus at least one who's pushed into voting for Democrats.

I think you fundamentally don't understand what drives these voters. How can a neocon ally with a populist and how do those two ally with an evangelical? It's simple: it's their hatred of the left that unites them. They hate the left so much that they are willing to defend the indefensible. They are willing to compromise on ANY position. You want them to win now because you think it will benefit your country but they'll turn on you in a heartbeat if it could hurt the left. The grim reality is that there is a sizeable portion of this country (on both sides) who would abandon liberal democracy if it meant that their views could be forced on society as a whole.

bs copium. handing taxbreaks to millionaires, costing tens of thousands of mainly his own followers lives because of a political miscalculation concerning the pandemic, cozying up to north korea and russia, unnecessary and costly tradewars that are not coordinated with america's allies, damaging america's reputation in the world, eroding worker rights... those ARE policies and they are NOT popular with republican voters based on principles. you people have found ways to somehow justify that and tell yourselves it's what you want, but what it comes down to is simple sports team mentality. partisanship and brainwashing through outrage media. this is not "just some tweets and antics", this is not just about "decorum", lol.

but thanks for proving my point about you people trying to downplay and justify literally everything he does, no matter how despicable, no matter how damaging, no matter how opposed to previous held "beliefs / principles".

well, who knows what trump did?

point is, they MOST DEFINITELY treat him like he's above the law - like during his whole presidency that is...

Can we maintain a conversation that has surpassed the Mar-a-Lago situation?

We've heard both "Trump has outlived his usefulness" and "DeSantis is the only nominee worth mentioning". Both went by mostly undisputed.

Have we already moved on from supporting Trump towards finding fitting substitutes?

The necons, the nationalist faction of the GOP and the chamber of commerce type Republicans all don't care that much about the priorities of the evangelicals - they'll happily give them abortion bans and religious exemptions on stuff if they receive a big and reliable block of votes for their own causes in return. There are indeed substantial disagreements and tensions simmering below the surface between neocons, CoC Republicans and Trump-style populists. Imho, the only reason why they've largely stuck with an increasingly trumpified GOP is that Democrats have concurrently zoomed to the left. Also note that we have indeed seen the conservative side of the aisle shed parts of these factions in recent years, e.g. the NeverTrumpers. Or think of the way corporate America pretty much openly turned on the GOP in 2020.

Iirc, studies from various countries show that at least 20% of every society are composed of authoritarians who don't value democracy at all.

I have no idea if Tim Scott plays well with white trash voters but why does that matter? You can shuffle the coalitions around a bit and perhaps Scott would do better in the city centers, suburban folk, etc.

Everything on the warrant was retrieved as far I know. Remember, in order for the judge to sign off, they needed to have strong evidence that the documents would be there (there are rumors that there is a Trump informant and/or a secret service agent who told the FBI of these docs). Personally, I don't think Trump having a safe is sufficient for this level of material, do you? Do you think that a safe would stop a decently trained field officer? There's simply ZERO reason for Trump to have these documents. End of story.

- Covid deaths vs freedom was a tradoff that most parts of Trump's base were happy to make. If anything, they've criticized Trump for not having resisted the lockdowns earlier, for having given power to Fauci, Birx et al. It's a weak spot for Trump, the main line of attack that DeSantis has on him.

- Trump's base was fully on board with trade wars. America at-large has come around to Trump's hawkish perspective on China in recent years, even Democrats are now in full "fuck the CCP"-mode.

- They don't give any fuck about America's reputation in the world. A less internventionist foreign policy/stopping to play the world's police was one of Trump's main selling points against the old GOP establishment.

- Worker's rights always poll well in the abstract. Most lefty causes do. These poll results have been out of step with the actual voting behavior of GOP voters for literally decades.
