because the whole "nAtO iS tHrEatEniNg uS" was a bs narrative to begin with. russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. putin KNOWS nato would never try to 'invade' it - not just because it's a defensive alliance, but because that would inevitably end in nuclear annihilation.
nato doesn't expand by actively seeking new members, it's not an economic union that benefits from larger markets, it grows when countries decide themselves they want to join and meet certain criteria. you know what would have prevented this war? ukraine being in the nato.

Having a hostile military alliance on your borders is a threat. Like that's not even a point to really debate. It doesn't matter how many times your TV called it a defensive alliance and said it's not a threat to Russia. Reality from their point of view is bases, weapons, missiles, international armies are closer and closer to their border.

For years (since the 2000s) the Russians have been crying about eastward expansion to their border, and we largely ignore it and keep on doing it. I'm not here to justify Russian aggression because they are imperialistic and they want to maintain their sphere of influence, at least on ex-soviet states but this is THE leading reason this is happening.

It would take around 3-4 minutes for nukes in eastern Ukraine to reach Moscow and the radius from such a location would cover a sizable portion of most population regions of west Russia. In contrast Russia doesn't have nuclear launchers in eastern Canada or Cuba.

So if one country can wipe out another one with nukes in a few minutes meanwhile for the other side it would take much longer because of geographic location the warheads are being launched from, which side has the clear cut advantage?
