You're confusing cause and effect.
Nope, you are confusing my point.
People start talking more about something because they become interested in it. After the media started covering the Michael Brown story, it became a popular issue, because human beings naturally crave conflict and this seemed like the next opportunity for us to distract ourselves.
The perceived problems of "race" have been thrust upon our society through the media recently, so naturally more people are developing the idea that something needs to be done.
It's not something which should be difficult to understand, but complex issues which can't be explained in a single poll seem to elude you.
