To the best of my knowledge, the meetings between Trump campaign officials and Russian entities did not amount to much and had no material outcome on the course of the 2016 race. Russian disinformation on social media might have had a marginal effect, but is also highly unlikely to have swung the election. And the Russians were doing that "for free" because they had plenty of reasons to prefer Trump over Hillary, even with Trump not being a compromised puppet.
The bigger story coming out of the Trump-Russia saga is that Trump then went on to, for selfish political reasons, stymie the investigation into Russian election interference. He put his own ass over the integrity of American elections, and for that he was blasted (deservedly so).
It was really obvious there were connections when Manafort was hired as his first campaign director. Manafort has Russian ties and was the one who hired Kilimnik.
Trump had no reason to hire Manafort.... except... ya know...
