Context matters, and just like Obama had no other choice than to make a lot of debt during the immediate aftermath of the financial collapse, Trump had no other choice than to blow the budget during covid. If Democrats had gotten their way, there would have been even more lockdowns and stimulus checks.

Trump was already running up the deficit before covid, but not nearly at the same pace - and that was with a strong economy to back up the fiscal expansion.

Biden DID give everyone a stimulus cheque twice since becoming president and still isnt projected to spend 60% of what 45th spent during his tenure

As you can see, the outlays in the federal budget (third column) exploded during covid, but have neither come down to pre-covid levels during FY 2022, nor are they projected to in FYs 2023 and beyond.
